In The News: Corner Brook golf course selected for diversity program to introduce golf to youth in N.L.

CORNER BROOK, N.L., September 2022 — Blomidon Golf Club in Corner Brook is one of 14 courses selected from across Canada for a new program that aims to build diversity in golf for youth.

In partnership with Golf Canada, RBC Community Junior Golf will offer youth access to golf by implementing First Tee – Canada programming.

The program introduces golf and its inherent values to youth.

It will also be paired with Youth on Course’s $5 green fee, which offers the participants lower rates at registered municipal or publicly accessible golf courses.

To qualify as a host, Blomidon head pro Wayne Allen underwent extensive First Tee curriculum training, said organizers in a news release.

“Later this month we will be starting the First Tee program at Blomidon on a relatively small scale to start, with two groups of six juniors, one group in the seven to nine age category and one group in the 10-11 age category,” said Allen.

“The juniors were picked through the local school and provide a good representation of ethnic and underrepresented groups within the community, children who may not necessarily have the opportunity to try the sport of golf if not for this program.”

The golf course will operate on a six-to-one coach ratio.

The 14 courses from across Canada were selected for the program based on accessibility to public transit and the distance from community centres.
